The search box is an important feature on every eCommerce site, it should therefore stand out and be easy to locate. There are a few things that can be done to ensure your search box is getting the attention it deserves.
First, it must be large enough that it can easily be located upon first glance. Having a larger and more prominent search box will attract shoppers to use it. If it takes a shopper awhile to locate the search box, the chance of them interacting with it decreases.
Ensure the width and height of the input field in the search box can include long product SKUS, product numbers and lengthy product names.
Second, ensure that default text appears in the search box whenever it is not in use. This text clarifies to site visitors what they can search for. A few example of default text include:
“Enter a Search Term”
“Search by Keyword or Item #”
It is important to note that the default text disappears when a user clicks on the search box, making it appear empty.
Third, At the end of every search box there should be a button or icon that allows users to conduct heir search. A magnifying glass is the most common search icon used by online retailers.
And fourth, it is important that the search box maintains a consistent design with the rest of the site. However, the search box should stand out and draw in the users eye. This can be done by keeping the area around the search box clean and clear of other tools. For example, a newsletter sign-up box should not be placed near the search box, as this will confuse users.
Remember, customers who have a clear end goal in mind when coming to your site, will head straight to the search box. Ensure the search boxes appearance is optimized and you are sure to build your brand loyalty.
