Are you missing out on providing customers with the product they are searching for, simply because they call that item by a different name? For example, do your customers get the same result if they search for “T-shirt” vs. “Tee”? Watch the video above to learn how configuring synonyms on your search tool can help drive revenue on your eCommerce site.Nextopia’s eCommerce Site Search and Navigation solutions.
“Direct your customers to the products you offer, and reduce customer frustration.” (Tweet!)
Lets begin with what a synonym is. A synonym is a word that means exactly—or nearly the same thing—as another word. In the case of eCommerce, a synonym is a different word that can accurately describe a product of another word. For example: running shoes and sneakers, or pot and saucepan, or hoodie and sweater.
Being aware of synonyms is important to your on-site search so that you can always provide your customers with accurate results regardless of the language customers use in their searches. Through advanced search tools, you have the ability to set up “synonym redirects” which will automatically direct a customer to products they were searching for regardless of product name. Using the example above, if you run a shoe store and none of your products have the keyword “sneakers” in them, you can manually set up a redirect so every search for “sneaker” goes to the results page for “running shoe”.
By setting up proper synonym redirects, you can reduce “no results found”, direct your customers to the products you offer, and reduce customer frustration. After all, you don’t want to lose a sale to a competitor because your customer can’t find what they are looking for using their own language.
